Amsterdam – A Great Place for Galleries and Museums

When visiting Amsterdam, if you are not in the city for long, make sure you choose Amsterdam apartments that are located near the top galleries and museums, as you do not want to spend too much time traveling.As with any short visit to a city I think it is worth just picking a few things that you really want to do and do them well. It is so easy either to wear yourself out or just skim over something that deserves more of your attention. It also means you have time to relax and soak up the atmosphere of the city.

Amsterdam is no exception it is full of attractions so for this article I am just going to concentrate on a few of the Art galleries and museums that are on offer.

Rijksmuseum means “Rich Museum” and they named it well. Opened in 1885 it holds the country’s largest collection of art and artefacts with dutch paintings from the 15th to the 19th century including works by Rembrandt, Vermeer, Frans Hals,Jacob de Wit and Ferdinand Bol. There is also a collection of Asian art. You need to leave plenty of time for a visit because it is very large. The address is Museumstraat 1 Amsterdam and the web address It is open daily from 9-5 and entrance is 15 Euros. If you want to catch a tram look for numbers 2,5,6,7,10 and 12.

Van Gogh Museum
This is a very busy museum that can have long queues so a good strategy is to go early in the morning.The recently enlarged Rietveld building is home to 200 paintings and 500 drawing by this prolific artist. The address is Paulus Potterstraat 7 and the web Entrance is 15 Euros and you need a 2,3,5 or 12 tram.

CoBrA Museum of Modern Art
If modern art is more your thing then CoBrA may be for you. It traces the development of influential Dutch artistic movements of the 20 century including works by Karel Appel and Eugene Brands. It can be found at Sandbergplein1 and the web address is It is open from 11am to 5pm tuesday to Sunday costs 7 euros for entry and you need a number 5 tram.

Whatever your taste in art, Amsterdam will not disappoint.
