Appetizers for a Barbecue or on the Grill

I got this recipe from my local butcher shop, and it is great! In this post, you will learn how t turn your next barbecue into a feast with a buffet of barbecued appetizers as well as your usual entrée or serve them on the grill for an indoor feast.

Barbecues need not be restricted to burgers and steaks. These recipes for a variety of appetizers and entrées will create a buffet that will turn your next barbecue into a feast.

All these recipes can be cooked on the barbecue or a grill so whatever the weather, you can enjoy a barbecue indoors or out, all year long.

For 6 parcels

12 asparagus spears
6 rashers of bacon
1 cup of sour cream
1 small shallot or 1 tbsp of chives
2 cloves of garlic or 1 tsp of garlic powder
2 tbsp of Parmesan cheese
Salt & pepper to taste

Make the dip in advance to allow the flavors time to infuse.

Finely chop the green part of the shallot and finely mince the white bulb.
Peel and mince the garlic cloves.
Mix together the sour cream, shallot, garlic and cheese in a small bowl, cover and store in the refrigerator for an hour or until ready to use.
For the appetizers, wrap two asparagus spears in one rasher of bacon.
Place on the high grill rack until the bacon is crisp.
Serve around the bowl of garlic dip, arranged like the spokes of a wheel.
Barbecued Bacon-wrapped Shrimp
Large cooked shrimp
½ slice of bacon per shrimp
Barbecue sauce

Wrap each cooked shrimp in a half slice of bacon and secure with a wooden pick.
Dip each shrimp parcel into the barbecue sauce, covering both sides.
Barbecue or grill until the bacon is cooked on one side.
Turn the parcel over to cook on the other side.
Serve with more barbecue sauce or a spicy dip.
Barbecued Drumsticks with Fruity Sauce

For 8 parcels1 tsp of black pepper
¼ tsp of salt
¼ tsp of Cayenne pepper (or chili powder)
2 cloves of garlic, finely minced
1 tbsp of Parmesan cheese
8 slices of bacon
8 chicken drumsticks
Vegetable oil

For Fruity Sauce
4 oz of cranberry, red currant or plum preserve
1 tbsp of apple cider vinegar or balsamic vinegar (to taste)
1 tbsp of Worcestershire sauce (to taste)
¼ tsp of Cayenne pepper
Mix the pepper, salt, Cayenne, garlic and Parmesan together.

Lay out the 8 slices of bacon and sprinkle the mixture over.

Wrap a strip of bacon firmly around each drumstick, securing the ends with wooden picks.

Place the drumsticks on a plate and cover with plastic wrap.

Store in the refrigerator for at least 20 minutes (preferably longer) to help the flavorings to penetrate the chicken.
When ready to cook, brush the wrapped drumsticks with oil and grill for approx. 12 minutes (3 minutes on each side, brushing with oil and turning a quarter-turn each time) until the drumsticks are cooked through.

To check that the chicken is done, pierce the thickest part of the drumstick with a thin knife or skewer – the juices released should be clear.
In the meantime, mix the preserve, vinegar, Cayenne pepper and Worcestershire sauce together in a small bowl and heat for a moment in the microwave.
Beat to blend thoroughly.

Before serving, return the sauce to the microwave for a moment: the sauce should be served hot to avoid the preserve staring to congeal.
Place the bowl of sauce in the centre of a serving platter and arrange the hot drumsticks around it.
Provide plenty of napkins for holding the hot drumsticks by the bone.

Chicken thighs can be substituted for the drumsticks but would be larger so more bacon would be required to wrap them. Because of their size, they would probably be better served in an entrée or as part of a buffet rather than as an appetizer.
